About

Phantom Lake Bath & Tennis Club is a community focused, family-friendly, inclusive environment. We are a membership-only, not-for-profit, 501(c)(7) social/recreation club located on the shores of Phantom Lake in east Bellevue since 1960. We offer a 6-lane, 25-yard competition pool with dive board. We offer adult-only swim, general use open swim, private lessons, swim team, dive team, water polo team, grills for use, and a ‘Baithouse’ snack shack. The Club is governed by a volunteer board.

History of

Phantom Lake Club

Phantom Lake Bath and Tennis Club was a brainchild of several Robinswood friends at a Friday night get-together more than 60 years ago. The property next to Phantom Lake was for sale. Going door to door through the Robinswood, Robinsglen and Spiritwood neighborhoods in December 1959, Hal Kirkland, Phil Hardwick, Don Nordstrom, Gene Graff, Curt Weiner, Joe Neukerchin and Paul Schultz asked neighbors for membership deposits. The pool opened May 1, 1960. Bob Reagan from Olympic Swim Pool of Bellevue, managed the pool.

The original pool was 42 feet wide at the shallow end and 24 feet wide at the deep end with a small built in wading shelf in the corner of the shallow end and a low dive board at the deep end. In 1970 the pool and office were enlarged. The pool was completely redone and resurfaced to its present configuration of 44 by 75 feet and with 6 lanes it is an excellent size for swim meets and water polo games.

History of

Midlakes Swim League

In the late 1930s various public beaches in the greater Seattle area first began competitive swimming on a recreational level. Most of these competitions were restricted to males only, with girls only allowed to compete in the sidestroke races. The first race of the Midlakes Swim League occurred in 1954. The annual championships were held at Pete's Pool (more like a small lake than a pool) in Enumclaw. Things changed rapidly in the 1950s as Eastside communities began to grow and build pools.

After two years in the Seattle Swim League, the Eastside teams (Samena, Phantom Lake, Newport Hills, Mercerwood, Mercer Island Beach Club, Edgebrook, Triangle and Norwood) formed the Midlakes Swim League.
